Yes, no office is made equal, and this transcends even down to the floor. Even though floors are essentially the same – they are generally hard surfaces that come in contact with the soles of your dirty shoes – you shouldn’t just go scrubbing the dirt away because there are some floors that need a specific cleaning method.
If you want to know how certain floors should be cleaned, read on as we go deeper into the different kinds of flooring material and how to remove dirt buildup from them;
1. Porcelain
Porcelain or floors made of tiles are the most common because they are arguably the hardest ones to damage – you can use excessive amounts of water and cleaning solution, and they would most likely still look their best. To clean porcelain tiles, you will surely find a cleaning solution in the nearest supermarket. But if you prefer to make one yourself, you can also make one using the same set of “ingredients” as the one used to clean vinyl floors. Mop the surface with a mop and the cleaning solution, wait for it to dry and you’re practically done – just be sure to sweep or vacuum the floor before doing so.
2. Vinyl
Some people use vinyl floors because they come in a variety of designs – tiles, marble, wooden floors, you name it. And because vinyl floors are primarily made of polyvinyl chloride or PVC, cleaning them isn’t much of a workout compared to the other ones on this list. If you plan to clean your vinyl floor on a weekly basis, you can mix a 1/4 cup of vinegar, a drop of dishwashing soap, and warm water into a 400mL spray bottle. Spray each piece of the floor and wipe off the solution with a damp microfiber mop. But if you want to clean them periodically, you can run a steam cleaner so that you can remove both stains and bacteria from them.
3. Hardwood
Hardwood floors are often finished with polyurethane or wax. It doesn’t take someone smart to tell a hardwood floor apart from the other flooring materials, but its finish is an entirely different ball game. To determine the finish of your hardwood floor, try rubbing your finger across the surface – if you make a smudge, your floor is most likely waxed. But if not, it’s probably finished with polyurethane.
If your hardwood floor is waxed, be diligent at not using water to clean it because moisture can easily damage this type of flooring finish. Instead, you can either sweep or vacuum the surface so you can keep them clean. As for hardwood floors finished with polyurethane, you can turn to water and a mild soap because the polyurethane acts as a water-resistant sealing. Just be sure to use a damp – not soaking – microfiber mop when cleaning so that you don’t have to wait for a long time for it to dry off.
4. Bamboo
The thing about bamboo that sets it apart from all other types of wood is that it is very sustainable despite being softer and more delicate. If your floors are made of strand bamboo flooring, you can just sweep dirt off dirt and debris like normal. But take extra caution when trying to remove stubborn dirt – do not scrub. Instead, use something that is less harsh such as a microfiber cloth or even a tennis ball. To wash bamboo floors, you can use water, a mild soap solution, and a mop that is barely damp.
5. Laminate
Laminated floors are fairly common because they somewhat resemble a hardwood floor, only much more resistant to damage. For offices that have laminated floors, you’re in luck because you’ll have a hard time trying to damage this kind of flooring material. You can mop, sweep, or vacuum this floor, just be sure not to try and polish them because waxing a laminated floor will make them look dull.
