The glossy exterior and varied grout design of a polished marble floor give the room an elegant aura while providing shine to the place. Not only are marble floors durable, but they also provide an atmosphere of royalty to a typical house. Hence, marble floors need to be regularly cleaned and maintained for this purpose.
Marble floors are susceptible to staining and etching. If maintained properly, marble floors can return to their original state. Thus, a well-maintained marble floor lasts much longer. Here are a few tips to maintain marble floors:
Sweep and dry mop the floor regularly to clean marble floors and remove accumulated dust on grout lines. Using a broom and a dust mop (or a dry mop) can remove grit, dust and dirt that may scratch the marble surface. A good rule of thumb to establish the frequency is to dry mop once a week for every person or pet living in the house. Therefore for a house of 3 people, it would be a good practice to dry mop the marble floor surface 3 times every week. Apart from keeping scratches and marks away, this process also helps to better identify any nasty stains.
Considering that marble is a natural and porous stone, acidic substances can leave etch marks on the surface. Therefore, it is important to be cautious when cleaning marble floors. Here are some tips to take note when cleaning marble floors:
– Use a pH-neutral soap and avoid acidic liquid. Acidic substances can leave etch marks on the surface.
-Use clean water to rinse.
-Avoid vacuums with hard brushes and wheels. (Make sure that it has a setting for hard floors and rubberish wheels)
-Never use steel wool to clean marble floors. Instead, use a soft cloth or sponge since steel wool can scratch and leave marks on the marble floors.
The legs of a table and sharp nails of your pet can easily cause etch (light scratching or physical changes to the stone) and scratches on the surface of the marble floor. Marble floors are prone to marks and scratches if poorly maintained. Hence, it is important to take some simple precautions to maintain marble floors:
-Cushion the legs of a table or chair
-Trim your pet’s nails regularly
-Place a mat, rug or carpet on high traffic areas
-Carry big and heavy objects rather than dragging across
Since marble is a natural stone, it absorbs substances quickly. This is why coffee spills will form obvious stains if not taken care of immediately. Such stains get darker overtime as they get absorbed deeper into the floors. Therefore, spills needs to be taken care of quickly to prevent any blemishes, especially on light marble floors.
If the marble flooring cracks or breaks, replace it immediately. Since marble is a natural stone, such a porous stone will allow standing water to easily seep into the stone and may break if prolonged.
Because marble is such a porous stone, it can be easily stained. Liquids can penetrate the porous structure of the marble floor and leave nasty and noticeable stains. Using soap and water is just not enough to remove stains from the marble floors. Here are a number of ways to remove stains:
1.Using poultice, which can be a liquid or doughy chemical mixture, can help to remove these unwanted stains:Wet the area with clean water
2.Cover the stains with the poultice mixture (500g of poultice can cover roughly 1 square foot of marble flooring)
3.Cover the area with a cling wrap or plastic wrap
4.Tape the edges of the wrap to the floor to seal the area completely
5.Leave it for 24 to 48 hours
6.(After 24 to 48 hours) Using a bucket of clean water and wet sponge, gently wet the layer and remove it
Baking soda is easily accessible hence this is one of the easiest and cheapest method to remove stains:
-3 table spoons of baking soda
-An ample amount of mild floor cleaning detergent
-A cup of clean warm water
Using this mixture, use a soft cloth or sponge to scrub the surface physically. For tougher stains, the mixture can be applied used as well. However, the mixture needs to be covered and taped with cling or plastic wrap. Likewise, the mixture can be removed after 24 to 48 hours.
Wear gloves (protection against acidic substances)
Wear mask (protection against toxic substances from chemical reaction
Use a bucket of clean water and mop to wipe up the cleaning agent
Use a dry mop to dry the floor after cleaning
